Don't be 'left' out: Say Merry Christmas

Terry Jacoby

PUBLISHED: December 17, 2004

It's been over a month now since the elections ended with a conservative slant.

Just about enough time for the Democrats to blame everyone but themselves for their failures. Just enough time for the Democrats to come up with a long list of reasons why the country continues to tilt to the right.

We've heard plenty of excuses. The red states are stupid. The country doesn't want to change presidents during conflict. Moral issues. People must want the draft. People must not want Social Security.

I even heard that President Bush was going to bring back the draft and start the draft at age 65. He would enlist only senior citizens, therefore, eliminating the need for Social Security. In one stroke of the pen, he can wipe out two problems: too few military personel and too many folks depending on Social Security checks. Brilliant.

This, of course, is crazy. But not as crazy as some Democrats suggesting this past election was stolen. This election was not stolen. And neither was the last one. Sorry, but the truth hurts.

And the Democrats refuse to look at the truth. So I am here to tell you what the truth is. You can thank me later.

First, Democrats, take this mirror. Look into it. This is our starting point.

Bush and other Republicans on the national stage won because people are tired, frustrated and appalled by the far left's game plan to cram certain agendas down Americans' throats. It's that simple. And the far left becomes the left by association.

Gay marriage, for example. Marriage should be reserved for the union between a man and a woman. How about civil unions with the same benefits as married couples? What's wrong with that? Just don't use the word marriage.

I have a friend in Canada who told me they are close to legalizing marijuana and already allow gay marriage. He asked what's wrong with that. I said then I want to legalize cocaine and I want to marry my dog. That's what's wrong with it. Where do you say enough?

This is a good time of the year to bring up one of the more outrageous far-left agendas. It's Christmas time. And it's a holiday. Why? Because Christmas is a national holiday. It was signed into law in 1870 by President Grant.

But, according to those out there in Leftsville, Christmas is offensive and doesn't belong in the public discourse. Any mention of Christmas should be banned, they say.

There is even a school district that has banned "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" because of the line "Then one foggy Christmas Eve." They want it changed to "Then one foggy holiday season eve." And this makes people mad -- and choke on their eggnog because they fumble over the words. And it makes people lean to traditional values.

Macy's Department Stores no longer greets you with "Merry Christmas." In Maplewood, N.J., the school board has banned all religious music from "holiday" concerts. No religious music from a holiday show when the holiday is about the birth of Jesus? Oh, that makes sense.

And don't think this absurdity won't reach Grosse Ile. It already has, my friends. Pick up the school calendar and try finding the word Christmas. You won't. Look all day long.

Someone on the school board should call me and explain why a federal holiday has been eliminated from the calendar. The students and faculty still get the time off. Why are they getting time off? Could it have something to do with a federal holiday?

Why are other federal holidays highlighted in red? Where is the word Christmas?

Even if you don't believe that Jesus is the son of God, what's wrong with celebrating him as a philosopher, leader and activist for mankind. We do that for Martin Luther King.

Trying to eliminate Christmas and religion from our daily lives is the kind of progressive agenda Americans will always reject -- because it's nuts. Like it or not, our country was founded on the principles of Christianity. God even makes an appearance in the first sentence in the Declaration of Independence.

The separation of church and state meant that the federal government was not allowed to impose a national religion. That's what it means -- not that you can't have a Nativity scene in front of the library.

Which one of the Ten Commandments don't you like? Take religion out of it and the message is still very positive. What's wrong with a positive message, especially for our children?

The extremists on both ends are dangerous (but the threat from the far left far outweighs the threat from the far right). So the country rests in the middle. And the middle leans to the right because the right leans towards a traditional and common-sense way of life.

Some liberals (the far left ones) say that Sept. 11, 2001 didn't change a thing. See, that's what I'm talking about. Sept. 11 didn't change a thing. It changed every thing.

I saw a bumper sticker the other day that said, "If you hate poor people vote Republican." This kind of stupidity only hurts the real agenda (whatever it is) of the mainstream Democratic Party. I know plenty of Republicans and only a few hate poor people. See, even the joke is stupid because there is zero truth in it.

And then we have the media and celebrities jamming their far-left agendas down people's throats.

But give people credit. They are smart. They look at issues and decide for themselves. They don't need the New York Times or Bruce Springsteen to tell them how to think.

The people spoke loud and clear last month. The message for Democrats is to change their message.

Merry Christmas.
