Police are waiting on blood test results before charges are issued, police Sgt. Richard Lyons said.
The bicyclist, a 26-year-old Grosse Ile Township man, was taken to Oakwood Southshore Medical Center, Lyons said. He was treated and released, the officer said.
At about 11:30 p.m. Friday, the man was riding his bike along West Jefferson Avenue near Grosse Ile Parkway when the driver allegedly struck him with a Ford Econoline van and fled, police said.
Trenton police called Woodhaven police, who arrested the driver.
The van had a flat tire and damage to the front passenger's side with hair on it, police said.
Officers smelled liquor on the driver, who said he had a few drinks at the Trenton Mid-Summer Festival, which was held downtown. The officers were unable to administer field sobriety tests because he couldn't stand.
The man also had watery eyes, disheveled clothes and no shoes, police said.
A preliminary breath test showed that the driver had a blood-alcohol level of 0.234 percent. Under Michigan law, a person with a level of 0.08 percent can be prosecuted for drunken driving.
When police asked the driver if he knew he was involved in a crash, he said yes, and that he hit someone, but he never saw him.
