In the 2007-2008 school year, the Grosse Ile Township Board of Education voted to change the district's election process.
Traditionally, the annual election for available board positions has been in May or June. To save on costs, the board voted to have elections coincide with the November elections. This is the first year for the change.
Seven community members serve on the board. Their responsibility is to hire the superintendent and set policies for the district.
Two meetings are held each month the second (work session) and fourth (regular business meeting) Tuesdays.
Terms of office are for four years, with a rotation schedule in place so only one or two positions are voted on each year.
Two board positions will be decided in November.
Incumbents Teri Hunter and Bill Tuinier are completing their first four-year terms of office.
They will be seeking re-election.
All community members who meet the following criteria are encouraged to seek these positions:
And a resident of the school district on or before the 30th day prior to the date of the election.
In order to get on the November ballot, candidates must file an affidavit of identity and a nominating petition by Aug. 12.
Filing packets are now available at the township offices.
A $100 nonrefundable fee can be filed instead of a petition.
The last day to register to vote in the November election is Oct. 6.
