Candidates file for office
U.S., state, county elections to be on ballot with local races

Voters across the state will head to the polls Aug. 5 to narrow the field of candidates seeking several elected positions.

On the ballot will be state, county, judicial and some local elections.
The primary winners will face each other and any independent candidates in the Nov. 4 general election.
The deadline to file for the positions for Democrats and Republicans was May 13, and candidates had until the end of that week to withdraw.
Candidates seeking election through no party affiliation have until July 17 to file to run.
In addition to the local election for Grosse Ile Township supervisor, treasurer, clerk and trustees, voters on Grosse Ile will select candidates in other political races as well.
U.S. House of Representatives
Incumbent U.S. Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-14th District) is unopposed.
The 14th District includes the Downriver communities of Allen Park, Gibraltar, Grosse Ile Township, Melvindale, Riverview, Southgate and Trenton.
State House of Representatives
Two Grosse Ile Township residents are among those who have filed to run.
Currently holding the position is state Rep. Kathleen Law (D-Gibraltar), who is term-limited out of office and cannot seek re-election. Eight candidates are seeking the open seat.
The Democrats are Burl Adkins of Grosse Ile; Gibraltar Mayor Jim Beaubien; Forrest Chapman of Sumpter Township; Brownstown Township Trustee John Cronin; and Deborah Kennedy of Brownstown, who serves on the Woodhaven-Brownstown School District Board of Education.
The Republicans are Neil DeBlois of Woodhaven, Gibraltar Councilman Jesus Garza and Linda Harmon of Grosse Ile.
The primary winners will face off in the general election.
The 23rd District includes Brownstown, Flat Rock, Gibraltar, Grosse Ile, Huron Township, Rockwood and Woodhaven.
Wayne County
Clerk: Six candidates have filed for county clerk, and all are Detroit residents.
Incumbent Cathy Garrett has four people challenging her on the Democratic ticket: Coretta Strong, Margaret Jones, Michael O'Brien and Diana Stanford.
The winner will face Lanell Buffington, a Republican, in the general election.
Prosecutor: Incumbent Kym Worthy, a Democrat from Detroit, is unchallenged in her bid for re-election.
Sheriff: Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans will face two challengers in the Democratic primary: Darron McKinney and Robert Brown.
The winner will face Republican candidate Taras Nykoriak.
All candidates are from Detroit.
Treasurer: Fourteen candidates have filed to run for Wayne County treasurer.
Incumbent Raymond Wojtowicz, a Democrat from Hamtramck, has 11 challengers for the Democratic nomination.
They are: Keith Windham of Detroit, Sigmunt John Szczepkowski Jr. of Riverview, Philip Cavanagh of Redford Township, Linda Zebrowski of Garden City, Sandra Campbell of Detroit, Kevin Kelly of Detroit, Beverly Kindle-Walker of Detroit, Thomas Marciniak of Plymouth, Robert Nozicka of Dearborn, Brian O'Donnell of Dearborn, and Catherine O'Meara of Grosse Pointe Farms.
Two Republicans, Brendan Dunleavy of Plymouth and Timberly Robinson of Detroit, are seeking the county treasurer's post.
Register of Deeds: Incumbent Bernard Youngblood, a Democrat from Grosse Pointe Farms, is being challenged by Terrance Hood, a Democrat from Detroit, in the primary. The winner in that election will most likely have the post; no Republicans have filed for the job.
Commission: Downriver residents are represented by four Wayne County Commission districts: 5, 13, 14 and 15.
District 14 serves Grosse Ile, Ecorse, River Rouge, Southgate, Trenton, Woodhaven and Wyandotte.
Incumbent Joseph Palamara, a Democrat from Grosse Ile, is unchallenged.
Circuit Court: Wayne County Circuit Court judges seeking re-election are: David Allen, Susan Borman, Ulysses Whittaker Boykin, Megan Maher Brennan, Bill Callahan, Michael James Callahan, Daphne Means Curtis, Christopher Dingell, Charlene Elder, Vonda Evans, Wanda Evans, John Gillis Jr., Vera Massey Jones, Mary Beth Kelly, Arthur Lombard, Wade McCree, Richard Skutt, Craig Strong and Robert Ziolkowski.
Eleven candidates are vying for three seats: Wanda Cal, Richard Cunningham, Sharon Grier, Robert Harris Jr., Daniel Hathaway, Susan Hubbard, Connie Marie Kelley, Corbett Edge O'Meara, Lynne Pierce, Neil Sawicki and John Sullivan.
To fill two partial terms on the bench, two judges are seeking election: Muriel Diane Hughes and Mark Slavens.
Probate court: Vying for three spots are incumbents Judy Hartsfield, Martin Thomas Maher and David Szymanski.
Wayne County Community College District Board of Trustees: Four candidates are seeking three seats: Juanita Ford of Hamtramck, Charles Paddock of Allen Park, Russell Bellant of Detroit and Sharon Scott of Westland.
