In a game that was played in wet, muddy conditions, Grosse Ile dominated, outshooting the Pirates 22-1.
Grosse Ile Coach Amy Rossow said her team did a good job of controlling Riverview's offense and especially the dangerous, high-scoring Dana Stephens.
Rossow said defenders Jennifer Louzon, Emily Goyert, Jessica Biddle, Abbey Herringshaw and Sam Palamara, along with goalie Shay Mannino, did an excellt job of keeping the Bucs in check.
Grosse Ile scored its first goal late in the first half when Sarabeth Makins took a pass from Cristina Kovich and buried it.
The second half was delayed half an hour by rain and it took both teams a while to warm up. Through much of the period, Grosse Ile controlled things with its midfielders and defensive players.
Finally, junior Kate Tamer scored to give the Red Devils a little breathing room. Center midfielder Brittney Stevenson assisted on the goal.
Grosse Ile and Huron played a high-spirited Huron League game that finished in a 1-1 deadlock one week ago.
The Red Devils, who came into the game ranked 10th in the state, came out strong and outshot the Chiefs 10-1 in the first period, but Huron and goalie Ashley Chambers kept the Red Devils off the scoreboard.
Grosse Ile finally broke through in the 53-minute of play.
Chandler made a diving save on Grosse Ile's Lindsay Dixon and pushed the ball to the outside, but Grosse Ile's Kovach pounced on the ball and scored for the Devils.
Three minutes later, Huron responded when the speedy Shelby Chandler collected a Chandler punt and turned it into a near-breakaway.
Mathison finished the play with a beautifully placed shot that beat Grosse Ile's all-state goalie Mannino.
Each team had some quality chances in the last part of the game, but Manino and Chandler held the opponents at bay.
Grosse Ile Coach Amy Rossow, who said that both Kovich and Kristie Tamer played well, said Huron's physical style of play took a toll on her team.
Dan Rossow, Huron's coach, said his team seemed so concerned with Grosse Ile's offense early in the game that it forgot to play offense itself.
"We played much better in the second half," he said.
After being badly outshot in the first half, Huron matched Grosse Ile with eight shots in the second half.
Grosse Ile is now 10-0-3 overall and 7-0-1 in Huron League games. Grosse Ile faces league rival Carleton Airport today.
Grosse Ile, which has only the tie with Huron as a blemish on its league record, leads second-place Milan by a half game. Milan's only loss was a 2-0 setback at the hands of Grosse Ile earlier this year.
