U.S. Sailing is one of the 43 sports that are a part of the U.S. Olympic Committee.
U.S. Sailing recognizes three outstanding sailing coaches every year. Coaches are recognized in three categories: National Coach of the Year, Volunteer Coach of the Year and Developmental Coach of the Year.
The honor put Dubois in the running for the USOC's Coach of the Year. He didn't receive the honor, but was one of five finalists.
U.S. Sailing is a program that offers instructors and race officials training and educational programs. U.S. Sailing also helps with sailing organizations and committees, and provides leadership.
Dubois has coached sailing at Grosse Ile High School since 2001, when it became a club sport. In fall 2005, with the help of Dubois, it became a varsity sport.
Along with helping create the high school sailing team, Dubois is the director of the Grosse Ile race team, is the president of his community sailing program and is on several more committees that support junior sailing.
Dubois said that he is humbled to receive the U.S. Sailing Volunteer Coach of the Year award. He said what is more of an honor is that "it gives recognition to our program."
Patrick Duffett, a junior at Grosse Ile High School and a member of the varsity sailing team for three years, said that he has known Dubois his whole life. Duffett said that Dubois is a great guy and really helps to improve your sailing.
Dubois said that one of the greatest accomplishments since he has been coaching Grosse Ile High School sailing has been achieving varsity status, and hopes to continue with the success of the program.
The varsity sailing team took eighth place at the Great Lakes meet in the fall 2007 season. Dubois said he feels that the team had consistent success.
Duffett on the other hand, hopes to do better next year.
Duffett said last year, the team lost half of its strength due to graduation. The sailing team will lose half of its members once again to graduation.
With teammates leaving, Duffett said that the team will work with what it has next fall, hopefully pulling out a good year.
