Marissa Cloutier remains No. 1 and 'Top Gun'

Grosse Ile is second at N-H, but queen still reigns

At last Saturday's News-Herald Girls' Tennis Invitational, Trenton Coach and tourney director Lynne Herman had a good feeling about her squad as the day went on.

"It's hard to see everything when there's three different sites," she said. "But the girls kept coming to the score table checking in for the finals and smiling.

"I told them to just keep getting medals."

The Trojanettes did just that, edging out defending champion Grosse Ile 23-22 for the 2008 N-H title.

Woodhaven placed third with 20 points, while Gabriel Richard was fourth (17), Riverview fifth (13), Roosevelt sixth (nine), Anderson seventh (8) and Cabrini last, going scoreless.

In the last match of the day, Trenton's No. 1 doubles team of Kelsey Bourassa and Lindsey Schering won the flight championship 6-4, 6-3 over Gabriel Richard's Amanda Chrzasz and Rachel Kim to assure the title outright.

For Trenton, it was its first News-Herald win since 2004.

"Grosse Ile had someone missing, Wyandotte didn't have their full squad - but 23 is still a lot of points to score," Hermann said. "Any one of our points was big. Everyone contributed."

Grosse Ile Coach John Shade missed his No. 3 singles Haley Coolsaet, who was at a girls' hockey showcase, but gave credit to Trenton.

"In spite of Haley being gone we had our chances to win," he said. "We didn't come through on a couple matches. It was a good day. Everyone competed well, Trenton did a good job."

But at No. 1 singles the Devils' Marissa Cloutier defended her Top Gun title she won as a freshman last season, by beating Roosevelt's Haley Cable (6-1, 6-1) in the final.

At No. 2 Trenton's Miruna Mosincat beat Katy Kaliszewski (6-1, 6-3) in the final.

At No. 3 Woodhaven's Kelsey Cox won, beating Gabriel Richard's Shelby Roberts (6-2, 6-1).

At No. 4 Trenton's Shannon Schwartz defeated Richard's Nicole Diegel in the final (6-1, 6-2).

In doubles, Grosse Ile won the last three flights starting with No. 2 Ellen Murphy and Abby Guthrie beating Lauren Pesta and Kayla Sassack (6-3, 6-1).

At No. 3 Grosse Ile's Christina Daly and Courtney Lehmann defeated Trenton's Nikki DiPonio and Maria Sims (6-4, 6-4).

At No. 4 Grosse Ile's Monica Egerer and Shelby Van Kammen beat Woodhaven's Maryum Khan and Hannah Wright (6-0, 6-4).

"I don't want to say I'm surprised, because the girls might get mad at me," Herman said. "Going in, I was hoping to squeak in at third. I am surprised - pleasantly surprised."

In dual-meet action, Grosse Ile won twice this week by 8-0 shutouts.

On Tuesday the Red Devils won at Milan 8-0.

Singles winners were No. 1 Marissa Cloutier (6-1, 6-0), No. 2 Paige Galecki (6-0, 6-0), No. 3 Molly Jettie (6-0, 6-0) and No. 4 Natasha Gandhi (6-2, 6-3).

Doubles winners were No. 1 Claire Guthrie and Haley Coolsaet (6-0, 6-0), No. 2 Monica Egerer and Shelby VanKamen (6-0, 6-0), No. 3 Emily Glovis and Voydanoff (6-1, 6-0) and No. 4 Kaylin Mandzuik and Kaylin Falkowski (6-1, 6-2).

Grosse Ile beat Huron 8-0 Monday.

Singles winners were No. 1 Haley Coolsaet (6-0, 6-0), No. 2 Natasha Gandhi (6-2, 6-3), No. 3 Glovis (6-0, 6-0) and No. 4 Nicole Voydanoff (6-0, 6-0).

In doubles winners were No. 1 Ally Hunter and Claire Guthrie (6-0, 6-0), No. 2 Ellen Murphy and Abby Guthrie (6-0, 6-0), No. 3 Courtney Lehman and Christina Daly (6-0, 6-0), No. 4 Mandzuik and Falkowski (6-2, 6-2).
