National Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 27 through May 3.
As professional educators, we readily admit that we could not do all that is accomplished for our students if it were not for our fantastic corps of Grosse Ile volunteers.
Our volunteers can be found reading to children, Motor Moms and Dads, dinners for our sports teams, working the arts days, career days, allowing students to job shadow, chaperoning special events D.C. trip, field trips, dances, etc. managing the Grosse Ile Middle School Student Store, Santa's Secret Shop, field days, band camp, organizing the various holiday parties, and so much more.
Our students' lives and instructional programs are richly enhanced by the caring people who generously give of their time. Grosse Ile has a higher degree of volunteer participation than most school districts. It is truly one of our Grosse Ile advantages. It makes all the difference, but it is not something we take for granted.
Therefore, during Volunteer Appreciation Week, the Grosse Ile Board of Education and administrative team will be dishing up a bit of thanks during an ice cream social. This event will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday in the new Grosse Ile High School cafe.
We invite anyone who has donated time and energy to helping our educational cause to stop in for a sweet treat on us. While this is only a small token of our gratitude, we did not want to let this special week pass us by without honoring all of you who care to make a difference
GI Going Green
The Grosse Ile Township Schools will begin an intensive process to review our energy usage. Working with a Michigan Association of School Boards' special program Energy Essentials we will undergo a comprehensive analysis of our use of resources.
Once this data has been compiled, the school district will create a plan to be more efficient in our energy usage and to raise the awareness of everyone students, staff, and the community of the need for each of us to be responsible and proactive in protecting our assets. Be watching for more information about GI Going Green
Grosse Ile jobs
Grosse Ile Township Schools is in the process of hiring a new high school principal and a new curriculum director.
Both positions have been advertised and the district will be accepting applications. The high school principalship application process has been extended to noon next Friday.
Interviews will take place on May 13.
Karen Roth, curriculum director, has announced her desire to retire as of June 30. The district has posted this available position and will be accepting applications until noon May 9.
This is not considered a full-time position. Candidates must be able to work as an independent consultant.
All available positions with the Grosse Ile Township Schools now require online applications. Anyone who wants to be considered for any job coaching, teaching, and janitorial, bus driver, paraprofessional, food service, or administrators must fill out an online application through the district's Web site (www.gischools.org/employment).
We are not able to accept any application if there is not a job opening available. Any position that is open is announced through our Web site.
Due to retirements, we will be posting some teaching openings in the next few weeks. These positions must first be made available to current employees and then external candidates will be considered. Interested people are encouraged to watch the district Web site for updated information.
Great Island Crab Races
In the next few weeks, you will be hearing about an exciting new event that is going to help support our new Elementary Spanish program, which will begin in the fall.
In conjunction with Islandfest, the GITS will be hosting a fund-raising event that should be fun for everyone.
We will be holding hermit crab races at Islandfest (May 30 and 31 and June 1) with all proceeds going to add Spanish language instruction in grades three to five at both elementary schools.
The addition of Spanish at these younger grades will be complementary to the middle school and high school language programs.
The intention behind the island crab races was to plan an event that would be enjoyable and in which children could participate. The CRAB (Crab Race Advisory Board) will purchase crabs for contestants to buy. Prizes will be awarded to those crab owners who are victorious and outlast the other crabby participants.
Interested individuals, groups and businesses can sponsor a race. The CRAB will be sending out special invitations to explain how you can be involved with this important support project for elementary Spanish. Ole!
As the 2007-2008 school year is winding down (only seven more weeks of classes), we are still hard at work. The next few weeks are packed with events that celebrate the accomplishments of our students.
There are so many special activities you will not want to miss; the school musical "The Little Shop of Horrors will be performed May 1 to 3, just to name one.
Please check on the district's Web site calendar for athletics, concerts, plays, etc.
