Community gathers to hear global warming presentation
PUBLISHED: March 16, 2007
The gathering space at Sacred Heart Catholic Church was aglow Friday night with the image of the Earth as viewed from outer space, drawing people in to an evening with the Academy Award-winning movie "An Inconvenient Truth."

Many arrived leisurely after attending the parish fish fry, while others scurried in after a long workweek, according to the Grosse Ile Faith and Environment Team.
But once the movie began, the crowd of about 90 adults and youths was quiet and attentive, as people viewed image after image of glaciers, oceans, rivers, lakes, and mountains, reminding all of the beauty of the planet and the changes taking place in the environment.
Former Vice President Al Gore skillfully narrated and guided viewers through charts, graphs and statistics, and provided explanations and insights into the many facets of the global-warming issue and controversy.
Following the presentation, viewers shared their comments and reactions, and demonstrated that both the views of individuals and those of scientists and politicians are sometimes conflicting and confusing, and at the very least, complicated, according to the team.
Handouts provided action ideas and Web sites for further research, and sunflower packets were distributed for spring planting. Postcards were available for those choosing to contact senators and the governor to encourage actions in our state.
This free event was presented by the Grosse Ile Faith and Environment Team, comprising representatives from four island churches: Grosse Ile Presbyterian, Sacred Heart Catholic, St. Thomas Lutheran and St. James Episcopal.
The team strives to make the connection between the faith-based call to stewardship of the Earth, and the practical concerns of the environment.
Each church is developing or considering a care for creation committee to address these concerns at a parish level and to support the interfaith efforts in the community.
Individuals interested in participating can contact their church offices.
