The aim of this program is to conduct reading activities for children by inspiring them to read and by creating opportunities to celebrate reading with them.
The focus of the Grosse Ile program is to emphasize to the students that reading is important by having important people read to them, according to the club.
On Feb. 26, 10 Grosse Ile Township officials and two Kiwanis representatives visited Meridian and Parke Lane elementary schools to read to children in 19 classrooms in kindergarten through second grades.
Taking part in the program were Kurt Kobiljak, township supervisor; Dale Reaume, township manager; Derek Thiel, airport manager; Lorinda Beneteau, administrative manager; Sharon Gray, deputy clerk; and Maggie Nash, assistant cashier in the treasurer's office.
Others were Tim Rooney, recreation director; Duncan Murdock, fire chief; Allan Skrocki, deputy police chief and Kenneth Pelland, police officer.
Representing the Kiwanis Club were Art and Clare Koester.
