After winning first place in the Huron League, the Grosse Ile High School team competed in the regional contest Saturday for region 12, division 3.
Regional competitions were held across the state. There were five regions for each of the four divisions, said Liz Kazik, coach for the Grosse Ile team.
The regional competition in which the Grosse Ile team participated was held at Columbia Central in Brooklyn.
With 708.6 points, the Grosse Ile team came in first place in the group, followed by Onsted with 680.9 points and then Ida with 678.4 points.
"The team received their best score of the season at the regional competition and are working hard this week to beat our best at the finals," Kazik said.
"We are very excited to be going to the finals this weekend as the regional champion."
"Advancing to the state finals is the reward for a season of hard work, and we plan to enjoy every second of the day," she said.
The regional champion and the runner-up team advance to the state finals, for a total of 10 teams per division, Kazik said.
The state finals are today and tomorrow at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids.
Division 3 performs at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
Division 1 is scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight, followed by Division 2 at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Division 4 will compete at 6 p.m., after Division 3.
For most of the girls on Grosse Ile's team, this is a first regional championship, said Ashley Kowalski, a junior and three-year member.
That was very exciting because they never got the chance to feel that before, she said.
"I'm just really excited to go to states," Kowalski said. "We worked really hard this season. We hope it pays off."
She said it is an honor and a privilege to compete at the state final.
"I'm confident in our team," she said.
The team includes 16 girls in grades nine through 12: Ingvild Brekkhus, Jaclyn Davis, Laura Hickman, Kowalski, Michelle Maci, Jamey Okler, Sarah Pelts, Megan Hazzard, Jayme Judd, Melissa Schwandt, Jessica Jacobs, Jennie Mathieson, Maddie Mikola, Lexie Compeau, Kaitlin Fischer and Jessica Hazzard.
Grosse Ile's all-region team honorees are Hickman, Pelts, Kowalski, Megan Hazzard, Maci and Jacobs.
