Riverview puts an end to Grosse Ile's season

By Hank Minckiewicz, The Ile Camera

PUBLISHED: March 2, 2007

Grosse Ile's hockey season came to a disappointing close Wednesday night as the Red Devils fell to archrival Riverview 4-3 in the pre-regional finals at Allen Park Civic Center.

It was the Red Devils' second loss of the season to Riverview and prevented the Devils from getting a rematch with Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central in the regional championship game tomorrow back at Allen Park.

St. Mary Catholic Central edged Carlson 4-3 to win its pre-regional in Southgate Wednesday.

The loss to Riverview Wednesday wiped out a stirring Grosse Ile comeback that saw the team rally from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits to tie the game at 3-all early in the third period.

Cody Holzworth had another great goal-scoring night, netting all three Grosse Ile goals, including the game-tying goal, which came shorthanded in the first minute of the final period.

The game-winning goal, which came with 3:55 to play in the game, was credited to Riverview defenseman Zach Taylor, who shot from the blueline on a powerplay. It appeared that the shot was tipped by teammate Ron Pattenaude in front of the net, but the goal went to Taylor with assists to Kevin Wilson and Pattenaude.

The game-winner was not without some controversy.

Moments earlier, at the end of a Grosse Ile power play, Riverview seemed to have too many men on the ice. The penalty was not called and it resulted in a Riverview scoring chance that forced a Grosse Ile defenseman to take a penalty.

On the ensuing power play, Riverview netted the game-winner.

Riverview broke on top with two goals in the first half of the first period.

Evan Sawicki and Taylor netted those goals.

With 3:57 to play in the first period a broken lightblub sent the teams to the lockerrooms and the Zamboni came out.

When the team came back out, Grosse Ile goalie Louis Morin held his team in when, with less than two minutes to play, he made a point-blank stop to keep the Pirates from going up 3-0.

Early in the second period, Grosse Ile got back on the game when Holzworth got loose in front of the Riverview goal on a power play and snapped it home. Ashton Munoz and Rob Zubke assisted.

Riverview's Jordan Petravicius answered with a similar goal five minutes later and Holzworth scored Grosse Ile's second goal with 1:59 to play in the period.

The Holzworth goal was a strange one as the Riverview defenseman challenged him and hit his stick as he shot. The puck came off the blade of the stick like a knuckleball and fooled Riverview goalie Alex Waple.

The third period started with Holzworth scoring a shorthanded goal just 35 seconds into the stanza to tie the game.

Minutes later Riverview seemed to score again, but Taylor's goal was waved off because of a delayed penalty.

Seconds after that, Morin made another huge save to keep the game tied

The victory was Riverview's third straight over the Red Devils, dating back to last year's regional championship game.

Riverview will meet SMCC tomorrow at 8:15 p.m. for this year's regional title.

The winner will advance to the Division 3 state quarterfinals in Allen Park on Wednesday. The likely opponent will be defending state champion Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook. Cranbrook is the team that eliminated Riverview at the quarterfinal level last season.
