A case involving a Grosse Ile resident charged with firing a gun at a police officer will proceed to Wayne County Circuit Court.

William McCarron, 42, is facing five felony charges, including two counts of assault with intent to commit murder.

McCarron, who has lived on Grosse Ile for five years, waived a preliminary examination of the evidence against him Monday at 33rd District Court in Woodhaven, choosing instead to proceed directly to the higher court.

He will be arraigned in Detroit this month.

McCarron has pleaded innocent to the charges against him, which also include two counts of felonious assault and one count of felony use of a firearm.

His bond was set at $200,000 cash at his Feb. 19 arraignment on the charges through 34th District Court in Romulus. He remains in the Wayne County Jail.

McCarron was arrested Feb. 16 in his condominium in Fishermen's Village on Reo near Groh Road.

Officers arrived there after a neighbor called police at 5:10 a.m. to say that McCarron was outside with a gun.

McCarron then stepped onto his porch and fired two rounds. Shots were allegedly aimed at Grosse Ile police Patrolman Alan Valiquette.

No one was injured.

After the shots were fired, McCarron went back into his condominium. Members of the Downriver Special Weapons and Tactics Team later entered the dwelling and arrested him at 8:40 a.m. without further incident.

At the time of his arrest, McCarron was allegedly highly intoxicated. A breath test showed that his blood-alcohol level was 0.25 percent. Under state law, a person with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated.

If he is convicted of the charge of assault with intent to commit murder, the penalty could be any number of years up to life in prison.
