Island Coney opened for business Tuesday, and the parking lot has been mostly full for much of the time since then.
An entirely new building was created from scratch for the restaurant, located at 8200 Macomb St.
Manager Zeke Taipi of Gibraltar, former owner of Zeke's Palace in Gibraltar, said Wednesday that business has been great.
"Everybody is happy about the food, the service, our establishment," Taipi said. "It's real nice."
Island Coney is owned by island resident William Bernardara.
"I think the service is great, and I think the food is very good, and (there is) a nice atmosphere," said resident Lynn Sheehan after she finished breakfast.
She said the addition to the island is very much needed and that it is a nice place for children.
"They don't really have a place to go, so this is a good idea," Sheehan said.
She also said she likes appearance of the building, which includes a variety of color patterns inside and a brick exterior.
Township Manager Dale Reaume had a combo special Wednesday. It was very good, he said.
"To me, restaurants aren't just a business," Reaume said. "Restaurants are also a place for the community to go meet and visit and spend time with each other.
"They get to see their neighbors."
The menu at Island Coney features a variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner items, including traditional Coney Island favorites, 23 types of sandwiches and burgers, soups, salads, appetizers, dinners, breakfast that is available anytime and a children's menu.
The breakfast menu includes 18 omelets, for example, and the 23 dinner items include such items as steak, lasagna or grilled salmon, each with a side, soup or salad and Texas toast.
The restaurant will be open at 6 a.m. daily. Carryout is available. The telephone number is 1-734-692-6639.
