Grosse Ile grapplers are making strides

Grosse Ile's young wrestling team got to battle opponents their own age Saturday, which left new Coach John Maunu pleased.

The Devils were at Milan's junior-varsity tournament and every local entrant won at least one match.
Brian Thompson had the day's best finish for Grosse Ile, taking fourth at 160 pounds with a 2-2 record. Teammate Aaron Coker also went 2-2 to finish fifth at 189.
Josh Moreno and Derek Gajeski each won matches at 103 while Dan Libkie and Alex Chilton picked up wins at 119 and 152, respectively.
The host Devils were swept by Carleton Airport and beaten by Gabriel Richard in a double-dual match last Thursday.
Rick Sheardown (103), Ryan Karrar (130) and Jeff Tyburski (152) all won by pin in the 66-18 loss to the Pioneers.
The Devils welcomed Huron League rival Huron last night, along with Dearborn Fordson and Erie Mason.
