But the young Pioneers also saw why experience counts as the senior-laden Red Devils beat them 6-1 at home.
Hoss made 40 saves against the Red Devils, who had to chip away at the large netminder to build the lead.
"He kept them in the game," Devils Coach Skip Howey said of the Richard goalie. "He is truly the best goalie we've seen this year.
"We knew we had to keep throwing shots at the net."
Cody Holzworth scored a hat trick for the winners, who scored three goals in the first and three in the third period.
Holzworth opened the scoring from Rob Zubke and Adam Wenneman at 4:43 of the first period, but Gabriel Richard tied the game at 6:02.
It was all Red Devils from there.
Holzworth got the game-winner on a penalty shot at 8:23, while Marc Casey scored at 12:45 to give the Devils a 3-1 lead.
Both teams went scoreless through the second period.
Grosse Ile put some distance between itself and Richard early in the third period when Holzworth got his third goal of the night from Zubke and Scott Georges.
The Red Devils went up 4-1 on a goal by Jim Jurecki from Zubke and Casey and Sean Wahl finished the scoring from Dan Keenan at 11:29.
"They're a young team with a lot of good kids and a good coach," Howey said of the Pioneers. "We've got nine seniors."
