Soup is the perfect comfort food for a winter day, and you can celebrate the divine dish again this year at the 13th annual Soup Day.
The slurp fest is set for 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Holiday Inn-Southgate, 17201 North Line Road, a major sponsor of the event along with The News-Herald Newspapers and G. Philip's Cafe, Catering and Cooking of the YMCA.
Soup Day, which drew 800 delighted diners last year, is a fund-raiser for The Salvation Army's food programs, which help feed the hungry Downriver. Last year's event raised nearly $6,000.
Here's how it works. For a mere $7 at the door, you buy a spoon, which entitles you to all the soup you can eat.
Local restaurants and caterers provide scores of varieties of nourishing soup. Spoon-armed diners wander the area, choosing what they'd like to sample.
The big-hearted chefs involved go all out to win trophies for best soup, most unique soup and best display. And the diners determine who wins. With your spoon, you'll get a ballot to fill out.
Don't forget to cast your votes before you take your sated self home or back to work.
Last year's best soup category was a tie. First-place winners were Pete's Place with Loaded Baked Potato Soup and Gering's Lounge with Seafood Chowder.
The most unique category also was won by Gering's, which nabbed the trophy with a rich, warm creation Cheesecake Soup complete with a topping of whipped cream and graham cracker crumbs.
Big Bear Lounge won for best display with its "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" theme. Executive Chef Kamel Sherrod dished up his "just right" soup, Northwoods Porridge, dressed as "Papa Bear."
Sounds like fun, doesn't it?
