Police have a suspect in custody on unrelated charges, Detective Lt. Joe Porcarelli said.
The incidents remain under investigation.
"All three of the detectives here have been working on it quite extensively," Porcarelli said.
Because the investigation is continuing, he could provide only limited details.
He did wish to clarify, however, that the suspect is under arrest.
The break-ins occurred during the day when residents were away.
Numerous items were stolen from each house, Porcarelli said. Because of the pending investigation, he would not detail what items were stolen.
Although there was some damage to doors, two other houses were not entered. Those incidents occurred prior to the break-ins last weekend.
Porcarelli said there are not many breaking-and-entering incidents in the township throughout the year.
Now, police officers have been getting telephone calls from residents who are frightened and concerned about their safety and welfare, he said.
His response to them is the same as it always has been, he said, adding that this is no different from any other time.
"You always have to keep yourself guarded by keeping everything locked and being aware of your surroundings," Porcarelli said.
"That should be standard practice."
He said residents should always be aware of their surroundings when they come home, making sure to lock the doors to their houses and vehicles. If a vehicle is left unlocked, a potential thief could have access to a garage door opener, leading to access into a house.
However, having so many break-ins in such a short period of time is unusual for Grosse Ile, the officer said.
