175 attend Wayne Metro meeting, many honored

Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency celebrated a year of programming as well as the achievements of clients, staff and community partners during its annual meeting, held Oct. 16 at the Fairlane Club.

Three Clients of the Year were recognized for their achievements.
Doug Haskins of River Rouge received job training and assistance from Wayne Metro's new Michigan Prisoners Re-Entry Initiative Program. Vickie Thornton of Romulus found safe and affordable housing with help from Wayne Metro's Homeless Programs. Nadia Kassim of Hamtramck received her general educational development certificate after attending Wayne Metro's Even Start Program.
Wayne Metro also recognized several partners that were crucial to the organization's success in the past year.
River Rouge was recognized for its assistance in the recent completion of the Visger Project, a six-unit transitional housing complex.
Melvindale also was credited for its continuing assistance and support of the Raupp Road Project, a 24-unit complex of supportive housing.
The Michigan Prisoner's Re-Entry Initiative Program and Tina Laginess, development director for River Rouge, were recognized for their case management and support of Wayne Metro's MPRI clients.
Deidre Zockheem, principal of Myers Elementary School in Taylor, was awarded for her dedication to providing quality after-school programming in the Taylor School District through Wayne Metro's 21st Century Learning Center Program.
Dentist Michael Izzo of Lincoln Park was recognized for providing low-cost dental care for individuals and families in need.
Also recognized for their strong support of Wayne Metro's new Head Start location inside Cortland Academy in Highland Park were Gayna Evans, principal of Cortland Academy; Arthur Carter, Highland Park school superintendent; and Earl and Namoie Wheeler.
Louis Piszker, chief executive officer, also recognized the leadership of two retiring board members.
James Jackson Jr. served as Wayne Metro's board chairman for 13 years. While accepting his award, Jackson said his experience at Wayne Metro "has been a labor of love."
Piszker also recognized board member Michael Chappell for 11 years of service to the organization.
Wayne Metro also announced that Jodi Adamovich, senior vice president of Fifth Third Bank in Taylor, is the new chairwoman of the board.
Terry Morreau, director of Christian Service for Sacred Heart parish on Grosse Ile, previously second vice chairwoman, now serves as first vice chairman.
